Gender discrimination and sexual harassment are pervasive issues that have long plagued workplaces globally. Despite
numerous legal advancements and heightened awareness, these injustices continue to undermine the dignity, safety, and equality of women in professional environments. This book, “Gender Discrimination and Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace,” seeks to shed light on these persistent challenges, providing a comprehensive analysis of the historical, legal, social, and economic dimensions of the problem. The journey begins with an exploration of the concept of sexual
harassment, tracing its global scenario and historical context. From the pre-1970s era to the contemporary period, the evolution of societal attitudes and legal frameworks is meticulously examined. Special attention is given to the Indian context, detailing the status of women across various historical periods and the profound impact of cultural and political shifts on their lives. Through an extensive review of literature, the book delves into feminist theories and the various strands of feminism, providing a theoretical foundation for understanding gender discrimination. The socio-economic profile of Odisha and Bhubaneswar serves as a case study, offering a localized perspective on the broader issues of gender inequality and discrimination. A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the critical examination of gender discrimination at the workplace. It highlights the gaps in gender data, the global and national scenarios of gender inequality, and the specific challenges faced by women in various sectors. The analysis extends to health, well-being, and the socio-economic factors influencing women’s work participation.
The issue of sexual harassment is addressed in depth, with discussions on its definition, types, legal frameworks, and the
impact on victims. The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013, is scrutinized to understand its genesis, key elements, and effectiveness in addressing workplace harassment. Case studies provide real-world insights into the prevalence and forms of sexual harassment, highlighting the urgent need for robust preventive and redressal mechanisms.
The findings and conclusions of this study offer a comprehensive overview of the personal and socio-economic conditions of women workers, their awareness of gender discrimination and sexual harassment, and the workplace environment. The book concludes with recommendations aimed at fostering safer, more equitable workplaces for women.
It is my hope that this book will contribute to the ongoing discourse on gender equality, inspiring action and change. By understanding the multifaceted nature of gender discrimination and sexual harassment, we can work towards creating workplaces where every individual, regardless of gender, can thrive with dignity and respect. It is the outcomes of my PhD Work.
