Engineering mechanics forms one of the fundamental pillars of engineering education. It provides students with the principles required to understand how forces and motion influence engineering systems and how these principles can be applied to analyse real engineering problems. A clear understanding of mechanics is therefore essential for students who intend to progress into subjects such as strength of materials, machine design, structural engineering, dynamics, and other areas of engineering analysis. The book Applied Engineering Mechanics has been prepared primarily for undergraduate students pursuing B.E. and B.Tech. programmes and is structured in accordance with the Anna University Regulation 2025 curriculum. The contents have been organised to provide a systematic progression from fundamental concepts to engineering applications, while maintaining a strong emphasis on problem solving and examination-oriented learning. The book covers the major areas prescribed in the curriculum, including analysis of structures, work and virtual work, energy methods, impulse and
momentum, impact, and the dynamics of rigid bodies. The topics are presented with an emphasis on understanding the underlying principles before applying the corresponding equations and procedures. A key feature of this book is its step-by-step approach to numerical problem solving. Important concepts are followed by illustrative examples and solved problems so that students can understand not only the final answer but also the sequence of analysis involved in obtaining it. Wherever appropriate, free-body diagrams, governing equations, substitutions, units, and final interpretations are presented systematically. Particular attention is also given to common errors made by students, helping them identify and avoid mistakes that frequently occur during analysis and examinations. Each unit is further supported by summaries, important formulae, problems for practice, and Examination-oriented questions. The inclusion of Part A, Part B, and Part C questions, together with model question papers, is intended to help students prepare progressively for university examinations while developing a deeper understanding of the subject. The objective of this book is not merely to help students memorise formulae, but to develop the ability to identify the appropriate engineering principle, formulate the problem correctly, carry out the analysis systematically, and interpret the result from an engineering perspective. Such an approach is particularly important because a numerical answer in engineering mechanics is meaningful only when its direction, nature, units, and physical significance are properly understood. We sincerely hope that this book will serve as a useful textbook and reference material for students, faculty members, and practising engineers. It is our belief that a strong foundation in engineering mechanics will enable students to approach more advanced engineering subjects with greater confidence and clarity. We would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who have supported and encouraged me in the preparation of this book. We also acknowledge the valuable contributions of teachers, colleagues, students, and well-wishers whose academic discussions and feedback have helped shape this work. Any constructive suggestions and feedback from readers for improving future editions will be highly appreciated.
