The biochemical tests that are shown in may be used to
separate Cronobacter from species that are closely similar to it,
especially those species that might be isolated from sources that are
equivalent. Phenotyping is susceptible to subjectivity and operator
bias, despite the fact that centralized databases with standardized
kits are readily available.
Additionally, when it comes to Cronobacter, commercial
tests, which are often used for Enterobacteriaceae, have a
significant lack of reproducibility. According to the findings of
Jackson and Forsythe’s investigation of more than 250 strains, only
82.3% and 43.2% of the databases that support the commercial
api20E and ID32E kits were determined to be genuine.
The revised strategy used by the ISO recommends specified
biochemical tests for each person rather than recommending the use
of any particular kits. Due to the ineffective phenotyping method of
identifying Cronobacter strains, it is unfortunate that certain
Cronobacter culture collections also include strains of Enterobacter,
Franconibacter, and Siccibacter spp. that have been wrongly
categorized.
