The first technical overview of autonomous vehicles was written for a general computing and engineering audience. The authors discuss
the practical experiences they’ve had while developing systems for autonomous vehicles. These systems are quite complicated, as they are
made up of three major subsystems: algorithms for localization, perception, as well as planning and control; client systems, such as the
robotics operating system and hardware platform; and the cloud platform, which includes data storage, simulation, high-definition (HD)
mapping, and deep learning model training. In order to get a better understanding of its surroundings and choose how best to respond, the algorithm subsystem distills relevant information from the raw data collected by the sensors. These algorithms are included into the client subsystem so that it can fulfill the real-time and reliability requirements.
