Since the last revision of this volume, the pace of advancements in the field of virology has continued unabated. While this rapid expansion has inevitably limited the extent to which other viruses could be discussed, we have made every effort to provide comprehensive coverage, with particular emphasis on viruses affecting humans and animals. Despite significant progress, many aspects of virology remain poorly understood, especially the intricate molecular interactions between viruses and their hosts. This book aims to highlight these existing knowledge gaps and indicate areas where future research is likely to focus. Growing concerns over emerging viruses—such as avian influenza strains with the potential to trigger human pandemics—have
further intensified public awareness of viruses as serious threats to both human and animal health. This concern has been compounded by ongoing global challenges like the HIV epidemic. and technologies employed by virologists to explore this fascinating field, and in doing so, develop an interest in its dynamic and evolving nature. context.
